OVGS Programme 2009-2010

We took your advice! This year’s programme will offer members three streams of instruction rather than the six provided over the past two years. We will continue with the popular introduction to various techniques, plus offer an in-depth course in needle lace and a course based on letters and words that will allow members to apply the design lessons learned over the last two years. There is still lots of choice, and we hope we have struck a balance to accommodate (and stimulate) all interests. And as always, you may stitch on your own projects at the meeting or assist with the military families pillow project.

2009-2010 Programme Calendar

We hope you will enjoy stitching with us this year.

1.         Needle Lace with Ruth Adams
Ruth Adams, who is a lacemaker, an embroiderer, and a talented teacher of both, will take you from the basics to beyond in a year-long exploration of the ancient technique of making lace with a needle. This is a program designed to open up new horizons, as you will find even the most intricate work can be produced from variations on a few simple stitches. Please note that this is a full-year program with increasing levels of difficulty.

2.         Techniques and More Techniques
Six more techniques have been chosen from the fabulous world of embroidery to give you a taste of their possibilities. We will begin with candlewicking, which originated in 18th century England but is better known to us as a colonial America technique for decorating bed linens. It has recently experienced a revival among both embroiderers and quilters. Future classes will introduce you to punch needle embroidery, stumpwork, Brazilian embroidery, or nué, and shadow work.

3.         Design with Letters and Words
Letters and words have for centuries been used as decorative motifs and in various art forms. Illuminated letters and manuscripts were extensively decorated. Letters and words were entwined as heraldic symbols. Calligraphy is another art form using letters and words. Graffiti has often been used to disfigure our public places but it too has evolved into an art form. These are the sources of inspiration for this year’s Design stream. In this part of the programme we will learn to draw letters, numbers and words and form them into a design that we can then adapt to make an embroidered piece.

You can also look forward to speakers at our December and June meetings and to a Garage Sale Night in March. So be prepared for another full and enjoyable year with the OVGS.

Enjoy!
