NeedleArts 2006

v

Presented by the Ottawa Valley Guild of Stitchery
May 26, 27 and 28, 2006

By Dani Baillie, NeedleArts 2006 Co-chair.

Wow its hard to believe that a year has come and gone and so has Needlearts 2006! The Summer of 2005, I was presented with a new challenge not only had I taken on the position of Vice President for the OVGS, I had agreed to take on Needlearts with my co-chair Sheila Wattie. Sheila was a true veteran to putting on Needlearts while I learnt and followed in her capable footsteps as chair in training.

This year Needlearts was a challenge in many ways: first of all we had a new venue to deal with, as Quilt Canada was in Ottawa this May. We wanted to take advantage of this unique opportunity, also we wanted to run the show in conjunction with the Common Threads Quilt Guild’s show at the RA Center. Our second challenge was introducing the Judged Original Embroidery Design Challenge, this was a first for the OVGS!

There were many behind the scenes volunteers to put on the show and we thank each and every one of them. However, it was Cindy Jackson and Mary-Lou Wilson who took a room and came up with the vision that made Needlearts show!

It took the vision of Cindy and Mary-Lou to make a bare room into an exhibit but also “tranquil” as one visitor quoted. It wouldn’t of been a show without the number and fantastic variety of pieces OVGS members contributed to the show. We had a total of 137 pieces not counting the pieces for the Education Table put together by Claire Todd and the 9 entries for“Threads of Memory” the Original Embroidery Design Challenge.
While at the show I heard nothing but comments and sounds of appreciation over the pieces entered in the show. The room was truly full of “eye candy”.

I would say that Needlearts 2006 was a true success. Thank you to every committee member, volunteer and entrant who made the show possible!
Also a huge thank you to the executive and members
for supporting us! Special Thanks to: Challenge Judges, Madelaine Basta, Erma Scrimager, Karen Wright; Ann Clarke for design and contruction of the Challenge and Viewers Choice Ribbons; Lois Jensen for her beautiful calligraphy, as always; Brockville Museum, Linda Heatherington, Catagraqui Guild of Needle Arts for the generous support with display materials.
